Douglas, Lanarkshire born centre half and club stalwart Matt Paterson began his football career with Bellshill Athletic and aigned for Hibernian in 1908, making his Scottish League debut against Hamilton Academical that August, He scored 38 goals in 445 appearances for the Easter Road club over fifteen seasons with Hibs. He was an ever present in their 1914-15 and 1915-16 campaigns, and was club captain for several seasons. During the First World War he served with The Royal Artillery. The only season where he was not a regular was his final season, when he played only 5 matches, scoring his final goal for Hibernian in a 1-1 draw at Ayr United in December 1922. He joined St Bernard’s in the 1923 close season and made 31 appearances for them during a single season before retiring in the summer of 1924.
