Description

Hill o’ Beath, Fife born centre forward Willie Paterson joined Cowdenbeath from local junior football in 1914 and spent time on loan at Glasgow Rangers in 1916. He joined First Division Derby County in 1920, making his Football League debut against Preston North End in January 1921, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw although despite his 8 League goals they were relegated at the end of the season. He played for The Rams until December 1923 scoring 24 goals in 68 games before joining Armadale on loan, and he subsequently re-joined Cowdenbeath in 1924.

A year later he returned to England with Coventry City, he was the club’s leading scorer with 25 goals in 41 appearances in his single season at Highfield Road which included all 4 goals in a win over Doncaster Rovers in September 1925. At the end of the season he joined the trail of professional footballers joining the nascent American Soccer League playing for several clubs among others Fall River Marksmen and New Bedford Whalers until well into the mid 1930’s.
