Description

Stafford, Staffordshire born Henry Pennifer began his football career with Hampstead Town, helping them to finish runners up in the London League in 1912-13 and to win the Middlesex League, scoring 22 goals in 20 matches that season, whereupon he was signed by Southern League club Queens Park Rangers. His record in 1913-14 for Rangers is uncertain, but by 1914-15 he was a fringe player, making just 3 appearances during the season, the final peacetime season before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football.

Pennifer served as an appointed lance corporal in the 17th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment), better known as The Footballers’ Battalion, during the First World War. Serving on the Western Front, he was killed in action near Pozières on 24th March 1918 and is commemorated on The Pozières Memorial.
