Lumphinnans, Fife born right half Jimmy Philp began his football career with St Bernard’s in 1935 from where he joined Heart of Midlothian in July 1940, making 175 appearances for Hearts during wartime competitions before signing for East Fife in August 1946 before the resumption of peacetime football after the end of the Second World War. Philp became part of the club’s famous half back line of Philp, Finlay and Aitken and was among the players to have played for the club in their successful post war era when they enjoyed creditable league and cup success.
East Fife’s best years were undoubtedly in the decade following the Second World War. In 1946-47, the first season after the war, the club finished third, missing promotion by one place. Scot Symon joined as manager in 1947. At the end of 1947-48, East Fife were promoted to the top flight of Scottish football as ‘B’ Division champions. During this “Golden Period”, the club won the Scottish League Cup on three separate occasions (1948, 1950, and 1954) in seven seasons. A third Scottish Cup Final appearance was added to its achievements list in 1950. Philp was integral to this success, joining Brechin City in 1955 before his eventual retirement
