Rotherham, Yorkshire born centre half Walter Picken began his football career with Tinsley United after the First World War before joining Second Division Rotherham County in 1920, his Football League debut coming at Birmingham in April 1921, his only appearance of his debut season. A regular for County from November 1921, he missed only 4 matches in 1922-23 but perhaps through injury he didn’t play for Rotherham’s first eleven in either 1923-24 or 1924-25, making his comeback in November 1925, playing in 20 matches before the end of the season, and scoring his only two goals for Rotherham, the first in an FA Cup tie as they beat local rivals Doncaster Rovers 2-0 in December 1925, the second in his 92nd and final match for Rotherham in a 4-1 win over Walsall in April 1926. He then appears to have retired as there is no evidence of him moving to another club.
