Lilleshall, Shropshire born inside right Jimmy Poppitt began his football career with Wrockwardine Wood, playing for Wellington Town in 1897, from where he signed for First Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1900, making his Football League debut at Derby County that September. A regular during his debut season, he played just once more for Wolves in December 1901 before a move to Southern League club Swindon Town in the 1902 close season after 3 goals in 21 matches for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
His first spell at The County Ground saw him score 12 goals in 33 matches but he moved on to Reading in 1903 and spent a season at Elm Park before returning to Swindon Town, where he added 5 goals in 29 matches during their 1904-05 campaign. Poppitt then returned to Football League action when signed by First Division club Notts County in May 1905 but.he was a fringe player during his two seasons at Trent Bridge, scoring twice in 15 matches for The Magpies before a move to Second Division club Lincoln City in June 1907. He contributed 3 goals in 24 matches during 1907-08 as The Imps finished bottom of the League and lost their battle for re-election, after which he joined non league Stanton Hill Victoria in 1908, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
