Bolton, Lancashire born centre half Stanley Popplewell began his football career with Barrow during the First World War, and after the War he signed for Southern League club Exeter City, making his debut in a 1-1 draw at Southampton that August. He was virtually ever present during his single season at St James’ Park, scoring 4 goals in 41 appearances for The Grecians, and was signed by Second Division club Blackpool in the 1920 close season, for whom he made his Football League debut, and only appearance, against Bury the same September.
Popplewell joined Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1921 and missed only 6 matches in their 1921-22 campaign, but he lost his place in April 1923 and only featured 7 times in 1923-24 before joining Lancashire League club Darwen. He played for Clitheroe in 1925 and Colne Town in 1926 before spending 1927-28 back at Peel Park but he made no further appearances for Accrington Stanley before his retirement.
