Description

Fleetwood, Lancashire born left back Billy Porter began his football career in local junior football with Windsor Villa of Fleetwood in 1924 before joining Fleetwood in 1925. A move to Second Division Oldham Athletic followed in 1927 and he made his Football League debut against Southampton in January 1928, becoming a mainstay of The Latics’ defensive line from the start of the following season. He missed very few games over the next six seasons and was twice ever present in 1931-32 and 1933-34 before Manchester United signed him in January 1935 after one goal (a penalty in a 6-1 defeat at Reading in January 1929) in 284 appearances for Oldham.

After being an ever present for United in 1935-36 as they won the Second Division Championship, Porter became a fringe player for United over following seasons. However his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War, by when he had made 65 appearances for United, during which he guested for several teams in wartime football before joining non league Hyde United in 1944.
