Description

Hamilton, Lanarkshire born right half Jimmy Porter joined Wishaw YMCA in 1920, from where Second Division Bury signed him in 1921, with his Football League debut coming against Fulham in April 1922. He soon became a first team regular and was an ever present as they were promoted to Division One as Second Division runners up in 1923-24, then playing five seasons in the top flight for Bury before their relegation in 1929. He became a true stalwart of the club, staying 15 seasons at Gigg Lane and missed only 3 games in three seasons between 1930 and 1933, playing his last match in January 1936, by when he had made 421 appearances and had scored 8 goals for The Shakers.

During the Second World War he acted as Bury’s manager from March 1944 to June 1945. In June 1949 he became manager of Accrington Stanley staying in the role until March 1951.

NB in the photograph Porter (left) watches Bury goalkeeper Billy Richardson collect the ball from Clapton Orient’s Tommy Green at Millfields Road on 29th September 1923. Bury lost the match 1-0.
