Poynton spent nine seasons at White Hart Lane but only ever played more than 30 times in their 1926-27 campaign, playing more than half of Tottenham’s matches in three other seasons. During his 10 years as a player, Poynton made a total of 156 appearances and scored three goals for the Lilywhites in all competitions, became the first Tottenham player to be sent off in a match against Stoke City in October 1928 before taking up the position of player coach of the reserve side in 1933-34.
Poynton joined Kent League club Margate in 1924 and played for Northmet in 1935, subsequently managing Ramsgate. In 1945 he was offered the role of the 1st team assistant trainer with the Spurs and was promoted to club trainer in 1947, a position he kept until 1972 before becoming the club’s physiotherapist.
