Wrockwardine, Shropshire born centre forward Billy Price started his football career at local junior side Wrockwardine Wood in 1936, before he signed for First Division Huddersfield Town in October 1937, making his Football League debut at Derby County in April 1938, scoring in a 4-0 victory and then again in the return fixture at Leeds Road in a 2-0 victory the following day. He scored 24 goals in 40 appearances in 1938-39 finishing comfortably The Terriers’ leading goalscorer but his Town career was interrupted by the Second World War.
He returned to Leeds Road after the War but was by now a fringe player and by the time he left for Reading in October 1947 ten years after having joined the club he had scored 32 goals from 63 appearances. He scored 2 goals in 17 games at Reading before leaving in January 1949 to join Hull City, where he had a shorter spell although he did manage five goals in just eight games.
In November 1949 he moved to Bradford City where his career experience something of an Indian summer, scoring a penalty in his second game, and finishing his first season as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in 27 appearances including a hat-trick in a 9-0 rout of Fleetwood in the FA Cup. Another 16 goals saw him again finish as top scorer in 1950-51 before he left the following season to join non league Winsford United after 33 goals in 58 appearances for The Bantams.
