After the First World War he re-joined Portsmouth in 1919 and was part of their Southern League Championship winning team of 1919-20 in the first post-war peacetime season. When Portsmouth helped form the Third Division in 1920, he played in Portsmouth’s inaugural Football League fixture against Swansea Town in August 1920, and was an ever present in their inaugural season, missing only one match in 1921-22 as Pompey finished third in the division.
Probert played 38 times as Portsmouth won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1923-24 but lost his place in December 1924, and he joined Fulham in the 1925 close season having made 183 appearances for Portsmouth.
