Campbelltown, Argyll & Bute born left back Peter Pursell joined amateur Scottish League club Queen’s Park in 1913 from Campbeltown Academical, making his Scottish League debut at Dumbarton in August that year. While with Queen’s Park Pursell received his sole Scotland cap on 28th February 1914, in a British Home Championship match against Wales which ended in a 0-0 draw. He made 31 appearances for The Spiders before joining Glasgow Rangers in the 1914 close season, but he had to wait until October to get his chance in the ‘Gers first team.

A regular for five seasons, he helped Rangers to the Scottish League title in 1917-18 and 1918-19, he scored once in 128 appearances before he signed with English Second Division club Port Vale for a £2,500 fee in August 1919, making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur that October.

He spent five years with the Vale making 167 appearances for The Valiants, before joining Wigan Borough in July 1924 for a two year spell during which he made a further 36 appearances. He later became player-manager at non-league side Congleton Town in 1926 and then manager at Dutch outfit Dordrecht.

He was the younger brother of Bob Pursell of Queen’s Park, Liverpool and Port Vale, and the father of Robert Wilson Pursell, who also played for Port Vale.
