Belfast born right back William Purves began his senior football career in Irish League football with Glentoran in 1890 and while with Glentoran he represented The Irish League on three occasions, on the first occasion in a heavy defeat to The Scottish League at Celtic Park, Glasgow in January 1894. Two months later he signed for Second Division Small Heath (now Birmingham City), making his Football League debut against Burslem Port Vale the same month and playing three times as Small Heath won promotion to the top flight as Second Division runners up.
Purves was then an ever present in their 1894-95 campaign as they finished a respectable 12th in the First Division, but after 7 straight defeats the following season Purves was dropped from The Heathens’ first team and he returned to Glentoran before the year end after 42 appearances for Small Heath, making further Irish League representative appearances against The Football League in an 8-1 reverse at Maine Road, Manchester in November 1897, and in a 5-0 defeat to The Scottish League at Carolina Fort, Dundee in January 1898. From 1900 he retired from playing and acted as Glentoran’s trainer.
