An outside right described at the time as “speedy” and “of the best class… dribbles beautifully, centres accurately and shoots with considerable force. He has proved one of the Hibs best captures”, Falkirk, Stirlingshire born George Rae began his football career with Falkirk Athletic, and played for hometown Scottish League club Falkirk from 1908, from where he signed for East Stirlingshire. He joined Hibernian in April 1910 making his debut in a win at Airdrieonians towards the end of the month, scoring 17 goals in 74 matches for Hibs in somewhat over three seasons at Easter Road before joining Central League club Kircaldy United in the summer of 1913.
He signed for Partick Thistle in October 1913, playing 13 matches for The Jags through to the end of the season. He subsequently played for Dunfermline Athletic between 1914 and 1919, scoring 4 goals in 20 matches during the First World War years. Rae served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the First World War and rose to the rank of temporary second lieutenant. He was awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valor.
After the War Rae returned to Falkirk and played twice for them in their 1919-20 campaign. He then joined Dumbarton in August 1920, playing 13 matches for The Sons through to March 1921, his final club before his eventual retirement.
