Gateshead, County Durham born outside left Alex Ramsay served as a gunner in the Machine Gun Corps during the First World War and played for Spen Black & White in 1917 and Swalwell in 1918 before joining First Division club Newcastle United in May 1919, making his Football League debut against Liverpool in October 1919 and thereafter being a first team regular during 1919-20, scoring twice in 34 appearances, both goals coming at Deepdale in a 3-2 win over Preston North End in his 4th appearance.
However he lost his place and only appeared 3 more times for Newcastle in 1920-21 before joining Queen’s Park Rangers in June 1921. However he didn’t establish himself at Loftus Road and only played 6 times for Rangers in 1921-22 before joining Welsh League club Aberaman Athletic in 1922, his last recorded club as a professional footballer.
