Description

Bow, London born centre half Charlie Rance had been a success with Isthmian League club Clapton, where he won two FA Amateur Cup winners medals in 1907 and 1909. In the latter final he played alongside Walter Tull in the Clapton forward line, who would also play with him at Spurs, before Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 1910, Rance making his Football League debut that December against Blackburn Rovers.

His Spurs career was interrupted by the War and after their relegation in 1915 he played 14 times as they won the Second Division Championship in 1920, but he had lost his place in the Spurs line up in December 1919. He managed 110 games for The Lilywhites (scoring once in an FA Cup tie in a 1-1 draw with Blackpool in 1912) before signing for Derby County in March 1920, for whom he played 23 games before moving back to London with Queens Park Rangers in the 1923 close season.  However he only played a further 13 matches for Rangers in the 1922-23 season before moving to non league Guildford United later in 1923.

NB although this was published when Rance was at Derby, it appears from the shirt collar that this photograph was taken while Rance was still at Tottenham Hotspur, probably in 1919.
