Description

Ballater, Aberdeenshire born inside left and later centre half Andy Rankin began his football career with Strath and Banks O’Dee, from where he was signed by Scottish League club Aberdeen in May 1920. A regular in Aberdeen’s team for five seasons, he scored 16 goals during their 1922-23 campaign, but he was transferred to newly promoted Cowdenbeath for £1,000 in November 1924 after 38 goals in 158 appearances for The Dons.

Ranking played two seasons for Cowden, scoring 7 goals in 47 appearances but he suffered from injuries and rheumatism, before joining the exodus to the nascent American Soccer League in 1926, when he played first for Indiana Flooring, scoring twice in 28 matches in their 1925-26 campaign, and then for Bethlehem Steel, playing 15 matches for them in 1926-27, before a return to Cowdenbeath, playing just once more for them in 1927-28. Cowdenbeath released Rankin at the end of the  1927-28 season and he then made a few appearances for Keith before his fragile health forced him to give up the game completely.
