Description

West Bromwich, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Tommy Read began his football career with West Cannock Colliery and played for Darlaston in 1925, from where he joined Third Division (North) club Stockport County in 1926, making his Football League debut at Barrow on Christmas Day that year. He played 11 matches for Stockport and was signed by Second Division club Grimsby Town, where he came into the side in January 1928 in place of Billy Cowell, missing only one match as The Mariners won the Second Division Championship in 1929, being ever present in their first ever season in the top flight, then missing only one match in in 1930-31.

Read was again an ever present as Grimsby suffered relegation in 1932, and helped Grimsby to win the Second Division Championship again in 1934, but didn’t play at all in 1935 as George Tweedy took over the gloves. After 259 matches for Grimsby Town, Read joined Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace in the summer of 1935, playing 16 matches for Palace across the season before joining non league Shirley Town in 1936, his final recorded club.

NB in the image he is shown with Grimsby team mates Jock Priestley, Jack Prior and Charlie Wilson.
