Description

Dartford, Kent born goalkeeper Arthur Reynolds had played junior football for Dartford Albion in 1904 and Dartford Town win 1905, from where he signed for Fulham for £50 in April 1910, making his Football League debut at Lincoln City the same month. He played 420 matches as Fulham’s goalkeeper between 1910 and 1925 despite the interruption of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football between 1915 and 1919. All of his matches for Fulham were played in the Second Division. He represented London against Birmingham in October 1913 and also The Football League against The Southern League in October 1914. Six years later, he appeared in an international trial match for the South versus England at Craven Cottage.

He had a wartime loan spell with Scottish League club Hibernian in 1916, playing in a 1-1 draw with Airdrieonians in August 1916. He received a testimonial against Chelsea for his long service in 1923, before in 1925 and played his last match for Fulham against Clapton Orient in April 1925, for whom he signed that summer, but he stayed only briefly at Millfields Road without making a first team appearance before rejoining Dartford in 1926, his last known club before his eventual retirement in 1929 at the age of 42.

NB in the photograph in a match with Sheffield Wednesday at Craven Cottage in October 1922, Reynolds punches clear from an unidentified player in the foreground. Far left centre half Jimmy Torrance watches the action.
