Great Bridge born wing half Sammy Richardson started in Black Country junior football with Greets Green Primitives in 1910 playing for Great Bridge Juniors in 1911 and Great Bridge Celtic in 1912 before joining First Division West Bromwich Albion in 1914, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in January 1915 and playing once more that season before World War One forced the suspension of peacetime football. After the War he returned to The Hawthorns in 1919 and missed only 2 games as West Bromwich Albion won the League Championship in 1920. He also played as West Brom beat Tottenham to win the 1920 FA Charity Shield. He played a further 7 seasons for The Baggies including 23 games in their League runners up season of 1924-25 before joining Newport County in 1927 after West Brom’s relegation. He had scored once in 207 appearances for Albion, and at Newport he enjoyed 4 seasons scoring once in 133 appearances before joining non league Aldershot in 1931. He also played for Kidderminster Harriers in 1932 before retirement. His younger brother Bill also played for West Bromwich Albion in the later 1920’s and 1930’s.
