Description

Rise Carr, Darlington born centre half Charlie Roberts became a major star in the pre First World War era and began his football career with Rise Carr Rangers in 1898, playing for Darlington St Augustine’s in 1899 and Bishop Auckland in 1900. After an unsuccessful trial with Sheffield United in 1900 his first Football League club was Second Division Grimsby Town for whom he signed from Bishop Auckland in May 1903, making his debut the same September against Bradford City but a year later after 4 goals in 33 appearances for The Mariners he was signed by Manchester United for £600, then a record, in April 1904.

He won his first England cap while at United playing in a 1-1 draw with Ireland at Ayresome Park in February 1905 and played in wins over Wales and Scotland in March and April that sealed the British Home Championship for England, however these proved to be his only caps for England, he also played 9 times for The Football League between 1905 and 1914.

He was incredibly successful at United playing with Billy Meredith in the teams that won the 1908 and 1911 League Championship titles and also he won the FA Cup with them in 1909 when they beat Bristol City 1-0 in the Final at The Crystal Palace. After 23 goals in 302 appearances for United he signed for Oldham Athletic in August 1913 for £1,500, and went on to make 79 appearances for them, scoring twice, until the suspension of football due to the advent of the First World War in 1915, retiring through injuries received playing for them in wartime football in 1918, and later becoming their manager between July 1921 and December 1922.
