Anderston, Glasgow born centre half John Roberts joined Scottish League amateur club Queen’s Park in 1913, making his debut at Aberdeen in November of that year. Prior to the First World War, Roberts worked as a drapery warehouseman. After Britain’s entry into the War in August 1914, Roberts enlisted (as did all of the Queen’s Park playing staff) in The Highland Light Infantry and was serving as a Sergeant when he won the Military Medal for “gallant conduct” on the first day of The Battle of The Somme in July 1916. During the course of the action he was shot in the shoulder and was sent back to Britain to recover. He continued playing for Queen’s Park until 1921 when he retired from football having scored once, against Kilmarnock in December 1914, in 78 appearances for The Spiders.
