Menstrie, Clackmannanshire born winger George Robertson started his football career with Yoker Athletic in 1904 and joined Scottish League Port Glasgow Athletic in 1905. A year later he joined Motherwell where he was successful to the extent that he was called into the Scotland team, making his international debut in a 1-0 victory over Wales at Rugby Park in March 1910.

Later the same month he was signed by First Division Sheffield Wednesday along with team-mate Jimmy Murray for a combined fee of £1,250, making his Football League debut alongside Murray on 25th March at Bradford City. He played both sides of the First World War for The Owls, scoring 10 goals in 1912-13 as Wednesday finished third in the Football League. After the War he played 5 League games during the first half of the 1919-20 season, taking his total to 173 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, in which he scored 31 goals, before joining East Fife in 1920, where he finished his career.
