Gateshead born centre forward Tom Robertson began his football career with north east junior club Wallsend Park Villa in 1909 from where he joined Second Division Lincoln City in May 1910, making his Football League debut against Glossop in September the same year, scoring in a 2-2 draw. It proved his only goal for The Imps in 8 first team appearances that season and he returned to Wallsend Park Villa at the end of the season, before joining Southern League Cardiff City in 1913.
After two seasons at Ninian Park his career was interrupted by the First World War, but after the War he joined North Eastern League Ashington in July 1919 and when they were elected to join the new Football League Third Division (North), Robertson led the line and top scored in each of their three inaugural League seasons, hitting 24 League and Cup goals in 1921-22, his career best, which included a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Hartlepools United in April 1922. He spent 5 seasons at Ashington, scoring 68 goals in 161 appearances, before finishing his professional career in 1926.
