Ryhope, County Durham born centre half Joe Robson began his football career with Marsden Rescue in 1919 and joined Second Division club South Shields in October 1920, making his Football League debut against Notts County in February 1921. Never a regular during his three seasons at Horsley Hill, he made 21 appearances for South Shields mainly at left back and left half before a move to Third Division (South) club Southend United in June 1923. He played 5 matches for The Shrimpers but soon returned to north east football joining Durham City in February 1924, where he was a regular after his move and an ever present in their 1924-25 campaign, scoring his first goal in a defeat at Wrexham in December 1924.
After 60 appearances for Durham City, Robson moved to Rochdale in August 1925 but his stay at Spotland was brief and after 4 appearances he signed for Lincoln City in October, where he scored his only other career goal in his second match in a win over Walsall in early November. He had three seasons at Sincil Bank but lost his place in August 1927, making only 4 appearnaces during 1927-28 to add to his 61 previous outings for The Imps.leaving to re-join by now non league Durham City in 1928.
There followed a lengthy career in non league football: Robson played for Pegswood United in 1928, Horden Colliery Welfare in 1929, and for Blyth Spartans in 1931; after a trial with Ashington in 1932 he played for Bedlington United in 1933, returning to Pegswood United and playing for Seaton Burn Welfare in 1934, then for Burradon Colliery Welfare in 1935 before finishing his career with Newbiggin West End having joined them in 1936.
