Sunderland born left half Billy Rooks began his football career with Willington and played for Sunderland Rovers in 1912 from where he was signed by Second Division club Blackpool in 1913, making his Football League debut against Bradford Park Avenue the same December. R00ks made 7 further appearances that season and another 14 during their 1914-15 campaign before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, but after the conflict’s resolution he returned to Bloomfield Road in 1919 and missed only 3 matches during their first peacetime campaign as Blackpool finished a creditable fourth in the Second Division.
He played two further seasons for The Seasiders before joining Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1922 after 4 goals in 110 matches, and he played for five seasons at Peel Park, sometimes at left back but mainly at left or centre half, scoring five goals in 148 appearances for Stanley before joining non league Hurst as player manager in the 1927 close season. He then finished his career, already aged 37, with a spell at Great Harwood in 1928, his final known club before his eventual retirement.
