Oldham, Lancashire born centre forward Jack Roscoe began his football career with Werneth Athletic and played for Cheshire County League side Witton Albion in 1927, joining Mossley in July 1928, from where he signed for hometown Second Division club Oldham Athletic in May 1931, making his Football League debut at Notts County that September, scoring both goals on his home debut in a 2-0 win over Swansea Town the next month. Roscoe scored 8 goals in 21 appearances for The Latics during their 1931-32 campaign but moved to join Chester in May 1932, where he scored in a 2-1 defeat at Southport in early September in what proved his only match for The Seals.
The following month he returned to the Cheshire County League, joining Macclesfield and at Moss Rose he was instrumental in The Silkmen winning the Cheshire League Championship in the 1932-33 season when he was top-scorer with 34 goals. Over the two seasons his 58 goal tally from 86 appearances included six hat-tricks. On leaving Macclesfield in 1934 Roscoe moved to Hyde United where he was still playing in 1938 when he returned to Mossley and he finally played for Hope Congregational, his career coming to an end there on the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. For Mossley he scored 178 goals in 188 appearances during his two spells with the club.
