Melbairn, Scotland born wing half George Ross began his football career with Bury Wesleyans and joined Bury, then in the Lancashire League, in February 1887. When they joined the Football League in 1894 he played in their inaugural League fixture, a 4-2 home win over Manchester City, and he was an ever present as Bury won the Second Division Championship at first time of asking and he was pretty much an ever present throughout the 12 seasons of League football during which he represented The Shakers. He was certainly the club captain by 1899 if not before, and stayed so for several years.
He was notably part of their team for their two FA Cup triumphs, when they beat Southampton 4-0 at The Crystal Palace in the 1900 Final, and put Derby County to the sword, winning by a record 6-0 margin in the 1903 Final at the same venue, with Ross scoring the first goal in that match. He was also in the Bury team that won the 1899 Lancashire Senior Cup. During their League era he scored 14 goals in 403 appearances before joining Rochdale in 1907 where he finished his career.
NB this photograph was taken before a match at Nottingham Forest on 16th September 1905. Forest won the game 3-2.
