Feltham, Middlesex born left back Sid Russell began his football career with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1931 from where he was signed by Third Division (South) Queen’s Park Rangers, making his Football League debut at Watford in February 1933. Initially a fringe player at Loftus Road, he got his chance in the first eleven on a more regular basis in September 1934 and played half their matches that season, before joining Northampton Town in February 1936 after 45 appearances.
He was a regular for The Cobblers in the three seasons before the outbreak of the Second World War, which effectively ended his playing career, by when he had made 117 appearances for Northampton.
He was the father (to be confirmed, also born in Feltham) of Sid Russell, who played football for Brentford in the 1950’s and cricket for Middlesex, Gloucestershire and the MCC.
