Glasgow born outside left and later centre forward Bill Salisbury began his football career with Glasgow St Anthony’s in 1917 and joined Scottish League Partick Thistle in 1918, where he spent the next ten years, and most notably while with The Jags he was part of Patrick’s team that won the 1921 Scottish Cup Final, beating Rangers 1-0 in a shock result at Celtic Park.
He scored 51 goals in 286 appearances for Partick before he was signed by First Division Liverpool for £3,000 in October 1928, but as it proved Salisbury was only at Anfield for a single season. He made his Football League debut at Arsenal on 27th October 1928 but didn’t figure on the scoresheet in a 4-4 draw. However, he had more fortune in his second away match for the club, when his second half strike was the only goal of the game at Portsmouth. Salisbury’s only other goal in the 16 First Division matches he played for Liverpool came in the 8-0 trouncing of Burnley at Anfield on Boxing Day. He also scored in the only FA Cup tie he played in, a third round win at Bristol City.
He left Liverpool to join Irish League club Bangor in 1929, joining Distillery later the same year and Shelbourne in 1930 before a return to Bangor in 1931. He returned to Partick Thistle in 1933 where he finished his career without making a further first team appearance for them.
His grandson Gordon Smith was also an accomplished professional footballer, playing for St Johnstone, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
