Description

Islington, London born outside right Fred Sargent played junior football for Barnsbury in 1931 and Tufnell Park in 1932 before joining First Division Tottenham Hotspur as an amateur in 1933, being loaned to their nursery club Northfleet soon thereafter. After turning professional with Spurs he made his Football League debut at Derby County in September 1934, although this proved his only appearance in the top flight as he didn’t play again in a season in which Spurs were relegated.

He broke into to the Tottenham team on a regular basis from Christmas 1935, and scored 17 goals in 1937-38, during which he was an ever present, but the Second World War essentially ended his playing career after 33 goals in 112 appearances for The Lilywhites. After the War he played for Chelmsford City, but he died in 1948 aged only 36 and a testimonial match was played on 20th September that year at the Chelmsford ground between the two clubs he had played for.
