Pontefract, Yorkshire born winger (he played both sides) George Schofield began his senior career with Liverpool in 1914 but hadn’t played first team football for The Reds before the onset of the First World War. He did however represent Liverpool in wartime league football, making 45 appearances for The Reds in their 1917-18 and 1918-19 campaigns, scoring 4 goals, and also played for Southport, for whom he scored the winner in a wartime league match at Anfield on Boxing Day 1916, but after the conclusion of the conflict he joined Second Division club Bury in 1919, making his senior debut at outside left in an FA Cup tie with Stoke in January 1920, with his Football League debut coming the following month at Rotherham County.
He made 3 appearances for Bury before joining First Division club Manchester United, but he only played once for United in the top flight in a draw at Bolton Wanderers in September 1920, but after two seasons in the reserves at Old Trafford he was released and joined Third Division (North) club Crewe Alexandra. He made 20 appearances for Crewe during 1922-23, operating on both flanks, scoring his only League goal in a 1-1 draw at Walsall in October 1922, before leaving Gresty Road in 1923 to join non league Altofts West Riding Colliery.
