Stevenston, Ayrshire born left half James Scott began his football career with Ardrossan Winton Rovers, and played for Ardeer Thistle in 1909, from where he was signed by First Division club Liverpool in 1910, making his Football League debut at Bradford City in April 1912, making 4 appearances for The Reds before the end of the season. He made the starting line-up on the opening day of the following season and played in six of the first nine matches before losing his place to Ernest Peake. Although he never played for The Reds’ first eleven again, he remained on their books throughout the First World War, when he made 2 further appearances for Liverpool in their 1915-16 campaign.
After the end of the War, Scott signed for Scottish League club Dumbarton in May 1919, making his debut in a draw with Ayr United that August. He scored twice in 69 appearances for The Sons over two seasons before signing for Third Lanark in the 1921 close season, where he played only twice for The Warriors’ first eleven before following the stream of professional footballers leaving to play in the nascent American Soccer League, where he joined New York Giants, scoring once in 36 appearances for them between 1923 and 1925 before his eventual retirement.
