Newcastle born left or centre half George Sewell’s first club senior football was Second Division side Barnsley, with whom he spent 1921-22 on their books without making the first eleven as Barnsley finished third in the division. Sewell left Oakwell for Third Division (North) club Tranmere Rovers in the 1922 close season, making his Football League debut in Rovers’ first match of the season against Stalybridge Celtic that August. Sewell was a regular in their 1922-23 campaign making 35 appearances but his spell at Prenton Park lasted a single season and in the summer of 1923 he moved to Third Division (South) club Merthyr Town. He appeared sporadically for The Martyrs, making 14 appearances over their 1922-23 campaign, but of these he was only twice on the winning side. The season end proved the end of his professional football career and his football career thereafter is uncertain.
