Bury, Lancashire born wing half John Shadwell began his football career with local junior side Turton in 1932, from where he joined First Division Manchester City in 1934, making his Football League debut at Huddersfield Town at the end of March 1935. He made a further appearance at home to Everton a week later, but these remained his only top flight appearances and, released by City, he joined Third Division South Exeter City in the 1936 close season, when he was described as being a ‘forceful type of player.’ He made his Grecians’ debut at Notts County in August 1936. In 1937-38 he missed just two games for Exeter and continued to play for them until the outbreak of the Second World War, which effectively finished his playing career after 2 goals in 95 appearances for The Grecians. He joined the Forces during the War, he was an Army Corporal stationed in Germany in May 1945.
