Description

Right back George Shaw started at local club Doncaster Rovers immediately after World War One before their election to The Football League but moved briefly to Gillingham, for whom he made his Football League debut against Merthyr Town in September 1920, before joining Doncaster Rovers in June 1922, for whom he made 64 appearances including 26 in their inaugural Football League season of 1923-24. In February 1924 he joined Herbert Chapman’s Huddersfield Town where he stayed a further 3 years making only 29 appearances as Huddersfield won the League Championship in three successive seasons (although Shaw’s 11 appearances in 1924-25 was the only season where he played enough to be entitled to a medal).

He then moved to West Bromwich Albion in November 1927 where he played over 400 games over the next 12 years, the highlight being part of their victorious 1931 FA Cup winning team, as well as their losing 1935 Cup Final team, a period which also saw him capped for England in April 1932 when he played in a 3-0 England win over Scotland at Wembley. He was also selected for the 1931 FA Representative tour of Canada. In total he made 425 appearances for West Brom from December 1926 to September 1937 scoring 11 goals, 10 of them being penalties, before moving into non league football with Stalybridge Celtic in 1938.

He was the older brother of Wilf Shaw of Doncaster Rovers who was killed in action in World War Two.

In this photograph Albion captain Tommy Glidden carries the FA Cup with team-mates at Wembley Stadium in the aftermath of their 2-1 victory over Birmingham in the FA Cup Final on 25th April 1931.
