Goldenhill, Staffordshire born inside right James Shaw began his football career with Goldenhill Wanderers and played for Frickley Colliery as well as spending part of 1925-26 on the books at Bolton Wanderers without playing for their first eleven. Shaw joined First Division club Arsenal in 1926, making his Football League debut at West Ham United in March 1927, scoring in his third match in a defeat at Sunderland a month later. Used occasionally in 1927-28 and thereafter not at all, he joined Third Division South club Brentford in 1930 after 4 goals in 11 matches for The Gunners, but he struggled to get into a strong Brentford line up, playing just one match for The Bees at Brighton & Hove Albion in February 1931. He moved on again to Gillingham that May, where he played 10 matches across their 1931-32 campaign before leaving professional football,
NB in the photograph he stands on the right with Arsenal reserve team goalkeeper Jack Moody.
