West Derby, Liverpool born inside left Danny Shone began his football career with junior club Earle in 1914 before joining Liverpool as an amateur in 1915, and after the First World War he played for Grayson’s of Garston before joining Liverpool as a professional in May 1921, making his Football League debut at Sunderland the same August in an inauspicious 3-0 defeat at the start of a season that would see Liverpool win the League Championship, Shone scoring 6 times in 15 League appearances during the campaign. He scored his debut goal in a 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park in November and grabbed a hat-trick in 36 minutes against Middlesbrough two weeks later, prompting the Liverpool Echo headline: “The Sun did not shine at Anfield but Shone!”. The following season, as Liverpool retained the League Championship, Shone was very much on the fringe, making only one appearance.

In March 1924 he emerged from the fringes to claim a regular place in Liverpool’s first team, and the 1924-25 season was easily Shone’s best at Anfield; he was an ever present in the 46 League and Cup matches and scored 15 times. The Derby Daily Telegraph reported on his progress in January 1925. “Danny Shone, who registered two goals for Liverpool last week, is one of the most improved players in the Anfield camp. When he originally joined the club from Garston’s he was thought to be a centre forward, but subsequently he deputised at inside left for Harry Chambers, and later, when Forshaw went to centre forward, became an inside right. This is his best position.” However, Liverpool had finished a disappointing twelfth and his career quickly waned.

Shone was only picked three times the next season and after playing solely for the reserves for two seasons before he agreed a move to West Ham United in the summer of 1928 to resurrect his professional career after 26 goals in 81 appearances for The Reds. Shone scored five goals in 12 First Division games in his six months’ at Upton Park before departing for Third Division (South) Coventry in January 1929 where he only played 8 games, scoring once on his debut against Brighton, during the remainder 0f the season, before finishing his career in 1930.
