Description

Hucknall, Nottinghamshire born inside forward James Short started his football career with Arnold St Mary’s in 1914. During the First World War he enlisted in the South Notts Hussars Yeomanry in May 1915 and served overseas, but was discharged owing to sickness in September 1917 – only three months before signing for Notts County in December 1917. Having scored two wartime hat‐tricks for Notts County, he joined Birmingham City in April 1918 as a guest player, and in May 1919 as a permanent squad member, making his Football League debut for Birmingham at West Ham in November 1919, scoring in a 2-1 win and netting seven more times in his next six appearances, the sequence of seven games producing six wins and a draw. He nevertheless dropped a division at the end of that season after 10 goals in 17 appearances and he joined Watford in May 1920. He scored 7 goals in 21 games at Watford before being released to non league Ilkeston United in August 1922 before returning to Football League action joining Norwich City in May 1923. He scored 3 goals in 11 appearances in East Anglia before joining Newark Town in September 1924, playing for Grantham Town in January 1927 and Lewison’s, Nottingham in September 1927.
