New Springs, Wigan, Lancashire born left back Jack Silcock started his professional career with Manchester United as an amateur in April 1916 after having played junior football for Aspull Juniors and then Atherton in 1915, He signed professional forms for United in September 1917, making his Football League debut at Derby County in August 1919, soon becoming a dependable stalwart for The Red Devils, missing only two matches in his debut League season. The following season he scored the first of his two career goals from the penalty spot in a defeat at Newcastle United on New Year’s Day 1921, his other goal coming in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in September 1928.

Silcock won 3 caps for England between March 1921, making his international debut in a 0-0 draw with Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff, and May 1923 when he went on the England tour to Sweden. He was also called up in May 1926 to the squad that went to Belgium and France but played in neither match. He also represented The Football League in 3 representative matches between March 1921 and March 1926.

After their relegation in 1922, he helped Manchester United to promotion as Second Division runners up in 1925, and was  part of their 1926 FA Cup semi final team that lost to local rivals Manchester City at Bramall Lane. A genuine stalwart for The Red Devils, he made his last of 449 appearances over 15 seasons at Hull City in March 1934, before leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 1934 for Oldham Athletic for whom he never made a first team appearance, joining non league Droylsden United later the same year, where he continued to play for a further two seasons.
