Charlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester born inside forward (he played both sides) Bobby Simpson began his football career with Westburn before joining Scottish League club Aberdeen in April 1906, spending four seasons at Pittodrie where he scored 22 goals in 90 appearances for The Dons, mainly playing inside right. Simpson signed for Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue for £500 in May 1910 where he made his Football League debut at Lincoln City that September. He was a regular for two seasons, scoring 9 goals in 56 appearances for The Avenue before a move to Southern League club Brighton & Hove Albion in October 1912. The record of his career at Brighton is somewhat uncertain, but although a member of their 1913-14 squad, he left Brighton, his last known club, after that season having scored 11 goals in 30 appearances for The Seagulls. He was still registered to Brighton at the start of the 1914-15 season but was on the transfer list.
His brother, J.J. Simpson, also played League football as a centre half for Aberdeen at the same time as Bobby, but only made a handful of appearances, just one of which was in a League match in May 1906.
