Staffordshire born centre forward Tommy Simpson played locally for Cross Heath in 1899 before joining Stoke, spending 1900-01 on their books without making a first team appearance. He moved across The Potteries to Second Division Burslem Port Vale, making his Football League debut at Lincoln City in January 1902, but struggled to establish himself in the Vale first team until September 1903, when he second top scored for the club with 15 goals in the 1903-04 campaign.
In December 1904 he was signed by First Division Bury, making his Bury debut at home to former club Stoke, but he struggled to make a strong impression at Gigg Lane and joined non league Stafford Rangers in the summer of 1907 after 9 goals in 22 appearances. He subsequently joined Hanley Swifts in 1908 before retirement.
