Right half William Simpson broke through into the Cliftonville first team, the only amateur team in the Irish League in 1922-23 and by 1925 he was club captain. He won a junior international cap for Ireland playing against Scotland and also won 2 full amateur international caps, playing against England in a friendly in Belfast in May 1925 and again in a 6-4 defeat at Maidstone the same November. He was described thus: “Small but gritty, Simpson is a regular terrier in tenacity”.
