Grimsby born centre half Harry Swaby began his football career with Grimsby YMCA in 1924 and played for Cleethorpes Town in 1925 before joining Second Division Grimsby Town, for whom he made his Football League debut at Notts County in April 1927. After not a single appearance during 1927-28 and only a handful of gameses in their promotion season of 1928-29, when Grimsby finished runners up in the Second Division, he broke into The Mariners’ first team in September 1929 and played more than half their fixtures that season, as Grimsby consolidated their position in the top flight. Described at the time as “Strong in defence, Swaby feeds his forwards with well directed passes”, he struggled to find a regular place in the team from 1930, and when Grimsby were relegated at the end of the 1931-32 season he joined Barnsley after 2 goals in 48 appearances over his six seasons at Blundell Park.
He had a single season at Barnsley, making 18 appearances for The Tykes, before moving to Midland League Scarborough in 1933, from where he joined Grantham in 1934, finishing his career at Gainsborough Trinity, whom he joined a year later.
