Blackburn born winger Leslie Smalley had a relatively brief professional career. He started his career in 1930 with junior club Audley Range before moving to Clitheroe in 1931. He joined Second Division Oldham Athletic making his Football League debut against Leeds United in February 1932, remaining in the Oldham first team until the end of the season and making 14 appearances, scoring 3 times, as Oldham finished 18th in Division Two. He was then selected for 6 games at the start of the 1932-33 season, his last game a home defeat to Grimsby on October 8th, whereafter after 5 goals in 20 games he never played a senior match again. He had trials at Southport and Accrington but joined non league Hereford United in 1933 before moving back to Lancashire re-joining Clitheroe later the same year, and thereafter joining Morecambe in 1935, finishing his playing days with Moffatt’s Works, whom he joined in 1936.
