Bedworth, Warwickshire born inside forward Billy Smith played for Old Hill Wanderers in 1900 before joining Worcester City in 1901 from where he joined First Division West Bromwich Albion a year later, making his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in April 1903. A fringe player at West Brom, after their relegation to the Second Division in 1904 he had a run of 12 matches, scoring twice, between November 1904 and February 1905 to add to his ten First Division outings over the previous two seasons, however at the end of the season he left The Hawthorns to join non league Brierley Hill Alliance.
After joining Tipton Excelsior in 1906 he joined Southern League Coventry City in 1907, staying a season before returning to Football League action with Second Division Birmingham in the 1908 close season, where he scored 5 goals in 17 appearances during 1908-09. He then returned to Coventry City but again had only one season at Highfield Road before joining non league Nuneaton Town in 1910, returning for a third spell with Coventry in 1911. Over his 3 single season spells at Highfield Road he scored 22 goals in 54 appearances. He finally rejoined Tipton Excelsior in 1912 where he finished his playing career.
