Description

Birmingham born centre forward Edwin “Ted” Smith started his football career with Brierley Hill Alliance in 1908 before joining Second Division Hull City in May 1910, making his Football League debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1910, making 9 appearances for The Tigers without scoring. He was then spotted by Southern League Crystal Palace and was signed in December 1911. Playing both sides of the First World War, he scored 124 goals in 192 appearances for Palace, including 26 goals in their 1913-14 campaign when he was the Southern League’s leading marksman, with 11 goals in 25 Football League appearances in 1920-21 and 1921-22 after Crystal Palace joined the Third Division (South).

This included 9 goals during their 1921 Third Division Championship winning season when he also played in Palace’s inaugural League fixture at Merthyr Town in August 1920. Smith was regarded as one of Palace’s greatest strikers and is their second all-time top goalscorer behind Peter Simpson, and ahead of Ian Wright and Clinton Morrison. He retired in 1922.
