Description

Fulwood, Lancashire born right back Jack Smith started his football career with junior club Moor Park in 1906 before spending 1907-08 on the books of Blackburn Rovers, for whom he didn’t make a first team appearance. He moved to Southern League Portsmouth in October 1908 but made only 7 appearances for Pompey before he moved to Reading in August 1910.

Described as “a very sound defender” who “has few superiors in the position in the South”, he continued to play with Reading both sides of the First World War, during which he served in the Armed Forces, before Reading joined the Football League in 1920, by when he was the club captain. He made his Football League debut for Reading in their inaugural League fixture at Newport County that August and made 35 appearances during the 1920-21 season before retiring from professional football at the end of the season.
