Description

Darvel, Ayrshire born outside left Jimmy Smith was the son of famous Rangers and Scotland international Nicol “Nick” Smith, and started his own career as a left back with Glasgow Rangers, for whom he made his Scottish League debut against Raith Rovers in September 1919. He spent three seasons as a fringe player at Ibrox before transferring to Aberdeen in May 1922, having scored once for Rangers, in a 3-0 win over Morton at Ibrox in March 1922, in 17 appearances.

He initially played left back for Aberdeen, making his debut at Kilmarnock that August, before moving to the left wing where he played for nine seasons. “He played many brilliant games for The Dons and scored notable goals” it was said of him in his obituary in 1945, Smith having scored 64 goals in 336 appearances for Aberdeen before his retirement in 1931.
